In terms of scale, this is similar to the ‘One surname back to 1830-37’ Gift Package option. In fact it’s the mirror image of following your own/ your father’s surname back along the male line.
However, this is all about following our foremothers; and as we know, by convention, women changed their surname upon marriage. That can make this more difficult to do.
This package includes direct ancestors along your direct maternal line (mother, grandmother, great grandmother, GG grandmother, GGG grandmother, etc) plus all spouses of each (but not their parentage or ancestry) and all children born to each generation. In-depth research of the children of each marriage who are not direct ancestors will not be included, but baptisms, entries on censuses and any other information while they remain at the family home will be included. In the image below you’ll see who will be included.

Just for comparison – here’s who would be included if you followed your own surname back.

In the page dealing with the One Surname option, I mentioned that if you are male, or if a close male direct descendant of one of the men on this line were to take a YDNA test, this line (above) is the exact line we would expect to see evidenced by the DNA test.
If you (male or female) were to take a mitochondrial DNA test, it is this direct female line – your mother, grandmother, great grandmother, GG grandmother, GGG grandmother, etc, right back through time, that we would see evidenced by the DNA test.
You’ll get from me a full report of all research carried out, including:
- Names of ancestors, dates of their significant life events, where they lived at various stages of their lives, what they did for a living
- Any additional spouses and children born to all marriages
- Copies and transcriptions (where needed) of all records identified and drawn upon in the research. This could include any or all of the following: Civil Birth, Marriage and Death entries on online registers; Religious Baptism, Marriage and Burial register entries; Municipal Cemetary registers; Census returns, Military Attestation, Service Record or Pension documentation; Newspaper reports; Criminal records; Electoral, Poll Book or Directory entries; entries on the England & Wales Index of Wills and Administrations. Please note that actual certificates for Civil Births, Marriages and Deaths, plus post-1858 Probate documents and Wills will not be included, although upon receipt of my report you may wish to purchase any of these (either direct through the appropriate website or via me, at cost).
- A family tree chart including all direct ancestors identified during the research.
- A smaller family tree chart for each family unit.
- I will also highlight if there seems to be an interesting ‘story’ attached to one of the characters not covered in the main report, that you might enjoy exploring afterwards.
- Any further areas for potential research that you might like to explore will also be included.
- The report will be delivered to you by email. Arrangements can be made for printing, if required, at extra cost, or you can print it off on good quality paper and keep in a pretty folder.
What I’ll need from you before we start
We will discuss this further during our initial consultation. We need to be sure I home in on the right family. This is the kind of information I’ll need to get started:
- Yours (or the recipients’) parents’ names, with dates and places of birth, and the same for grandparents if you have it.
- Copies (photos/scans) of any relevant birth, marriage and death certificates you already have.
- Any other information you have about family members – like the name of a great uncle or your grandmother’s cousin – along with known or likely years of birth, death, etc. This can help to home in on the right family, particularly if the surname is not uncommon.
