One Place Studies

A One Place Study brings together family and local history by helping us to consider our people and families in their physical and social context: the time and place. The ‘Place’ might be a town, village, suburb, estate, or even a street or an individual building.  When we embark on a One Place Study we set the parameters, and this could include restricting the period of the research to a time when our ancestors were there.

As a member of The Society for One Place Studies, I’ve registered two studies of my own. They’re quite different, and relate to different lines of my ancestry. These are definitely ‘works in progress’ and will be for some time to come, since they involve trips to distant archives along with a good deal of reading and analysis of documents.

Follow the links to the dedicated pages for my studies, These will be updated as I progress (slowly!) through my action plans.

Shackleton’s Fold One Place Study
Shackleton’s Fold no longer exists. It was a narrow ‘fold’ or alley with nineteen back-to-back houses in the New Wortley area of Leeds. It existed only from the 1840s until the end of the 1930s, and its precise location is now beneath the A643.

Starbotton One Place Study
Starbotton is a tiny hamlet in Upper Wharfedale in North Yorkshire. My interest is in the life of the people who lived there and particularly their connections with other parts of Wharfedale. My period of interest is prior to about 1750.

Other Places
You’ll also find links to some information about other Places where I’ve done a fair bit of research on my Useful Info page. These are not One Place Studies, just handy links to useful sources.
